REIMAGINING our Biosphere
A Whole-System Game for Change
REIMAGINING our Biosphere is a customisable bioregional game developed by Ali Hodgson as part of her year-long position as the 2023/4 Isle of Man’s UNESCO Biosphere Artist in Residence.
Grounded in Regenerative Design principles, whole systems thinking and Ali’s background in social design, the game has been created to develop our capacity to collectively reimagine our future, while taking into account the whole human/ecological system that we are all part of. Players are invited to participate in ways that help cultivate a holistic perspective to change in which nothing significant is left out. The game can be used as both a light-touch public engagement tool with people of any age or background, as well as a deeper facilitation method for communities, businesses and policy makers, with a particular focus on any issues they are facing or wishing to explore.

Playing Our Way Into Potential
Since the game’s launch in May 2024 in the Isle of Man (the only whole country to be awarded UNESCO Biosphere status), it has been played with over 500 people and a further series of events are scheduled in the coming months to reach many more, bringing together leaders from the sustainability sectors, business, policy making and the creative industries to collaborate, share and explore our future potential.
Game sessions have been held in collaboration, co-facilitated or hosted with and by organisations such as Manx Wildlife Trust, Earthscope and Net Zero IOM (the Isle of Man Government’s Climate Change and Transformation Team) to REIMAGINE a nature-positive future.
Some of the outcomes from these game sessions will be exhibited at the UNESCO Biosphere Artist in Residence end-of-year exhibition held at the Santander Work Café in Douglas (Isle of Man) from the 16th to the 20th of September. There will also be a public drop-in game session at the same venue from 2-5pm on the 18th of September.
Please see the tour dates below for a list of the next upcoming game sessions and events and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you want to know more or are interested in hosting a Biosphere Game event yourself.

It can be used with individuals and groups from all ages and backgrounds, and this makes it a powerful and inclusive tool for anyone wishing to facilitate change.

I Want to Play!
So you want to play…
If you or your organisation or community is interested in playing REIMAGINING our Biosphere, then lets talk.
Perhaps you want a customised version created for your specific bioregion, needs or focus. Perhaps you’d like facilitator training in how to get the most from it. Or maybe you just want to know more, learn how the game might benefit your own community or even collaborate. Please get in touch and lets explore what is possible!
The game is suitable as a tool for many different situations and can be designed to suit many needs; from corporates, NGOs, change and policy makers, right through to youth groups, students, communities and individuals wanting to create holistic change or better understand the complex challenges we currently face in the ecosystemic crisis.

The Origin Story
The Game Background
-
The background development for this game has arisen from many places, people and years of exploration, but a few notable sources of inspiration are:
The World Model (World System Mapping: For Human-Planetary Ecosystem Understanding) available through H3Uni under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license framework: https://www.h3uni.org/facilitation-guide/synergy-with-the-world-mandala/ and originally developed by Dr Anthony Hodgson.
The work of Rob Hopkins, co-founder of the Transition Network and author of ‘From What is to What If: Unleashing the Power of Imagination to Create the Future We Want’
The work of Dr Daniel Christian Wahl, writer, educator, consultant and author of ‘Designing Regenerative Cultures’.
This game forms a significant part of my Biosphere Artist in Residency role through 2023/24 and my hope is to continue to develop its use and collaborative potential as part of that residency and beyond.

Why me? My name is Ali Hodgson. I care about the world, its people, connectivity and creativity and I believe imagination and collaboration are the key to facing the ecosystemic challenges we are facing globally.
I’m an award winning values-led graphic artist and social designer with an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art in London, where I specialised in developing communication strategies for complex social and ecological issues. I have worked with organisations such as the International Futures Forum, World Fair Trade Organisation, Enable Foundation, EcoLabs, Manx Wildlife Trust, Net Zero IOM and many more.
I’m also the daughter of Dr Anthony Hodgson, a jazz playing chemist turned systems scientist who spent a lifetime researching collaboration, trans-disciplinary and applied creative thinking. With a doctorate in systems science and four decades of facilitating leadership teams in large organisations, and a deep commitment to exploring new modes of education for navigating a world stirred by the widening gap between human life and planetary limits, he has inspired me many times over in the work I do and we have collaborated on projects of all sizes.
Anthony is one of the founding members of H3Uni, a charitable enterprise that currently holds the creative commons licence for the World Model, of which this game is based on.

“One might say that human societies have two boundaries. One boundary is drawn by the requirements of the natural world and the other by the collective imagination.”

The Biodiversity Creation Station
The Biodiversity Creation Station has been designed to as another way to encourage younger (and not-so-young!) players to enter the REIMAGINING our Biosphere game. Within the context of the Biodiversity Crisis, participants were asked the question: ‘What plants, animals and fungi do we want to take with us into the future?’.
Next to the game board, model making materials and plenty of images of native bioregional life for inspiration are available to help create the biodiversity we want to ensure our future holds. Participants are then invited to add their creations to the map of the future, and quickly the game board fills up with colourful, flourishing life and a future everyone wants to be a part of! If there are any budding engineers, architects or scientists in the mix, any other form of future creation we may wish to see in a nature-positive future may also start to appear on the map.
